Earle, 1962, 22" x 26"
I bought this piece at the same time as "Bearded Man in Floral Hat" above. This is not a work I've ever displayed, but I think this nude fits in well with the few others in my collection. This may sound unbelievable, but it's really very difficult to find truly interesting or spectacularly awful nudes. Surprisingly, most of the paintings I encounter are very tastefully done and skillfully executed. I'm speculating that it really takes chutzpah to tackle the nude human form, and that in general most amateurs either can't find models, or are daunted at the task of painting something which is so wrapped up in societal taboos and which is such a large part of modern imagery.
