The resemblance between the two figures on the right really is quite striking, but I think it's the "posed" nature of this piece which really knocks me for a loop. This painting reminds me of those old wartime photographs you used to see in Life Magazine, with the soldiers' stoically posing for the camera while bombs explode and tanks roll on in the background. I haven't seen the movie of the same name, but the first words out of anyone's mouth who sees this painting are, "Bridge Over the River Kwai !!! ".
